TBAALAS Recognition Awards Call For Nominations

Howdy!! It’s that time of the year where we ALL need to begin nominating individuals for consideration as a recipient of the Texas Branch AALAS Recognition Awards.  These awards are intended to recognize any outstanding individual including Animal Care Technicians, Animal Health Technologists, Laboratory and Research Technicians, Animal Care Supervisors, Facility Managers, Clinical Veterinarians and Vendors.  PLEASE take this opportunity to recognize and honor outstanding employees and colleagues as an integral member of your research team.  The following are the six recognition awards offered:

Technician Recognition Award

This award consists of three levels.  The qualifications for each level are as follows:

Level I, Rookie: 1-2 years employed

Level II, Non-Supervisor: 2+ years employed

Level III, Supervisor: 2+ years employed

Each level's award recipient will receive a plaque, $100 honorarium and a one year membership to TBAALAS.  The nominee does not need to be a TBAALAS member.  However, the nomination must be submitted by a TBAALAS member.  If your nominee is a supervisor or a training specialist, primarily responsible for other technicians, please include him/her Level III, ASupervisor.@  If you have any questions concerning what level to use, please call Andy Pesek, (979)845-4522.  Please cover each area in the suggested criteria for nominations.  Each nomination is graded objectively.  If any criteria are not addressed in the nomination and support letters, the nominee will receive a score of zero in that category.  Please do not overlook previous nominees that may not have been selected in previous years.  Resubmit names if you feel they deserve another opportunity.

Allentown Facility Manager's Award

This award, sponsored by Allentown Caging Equipment Company, is intended to recognize outstanding performance at the managerial level.  To qualify, a candidate must be a facility manager, oversee the daily operation of an animal facility.  He/she must be a TBAALAS member in good standing and be nominated by a TBAALAS member.  AALAS certification is preferred but not mandatory.  The recipient of the award will receive a plaque and $250 honorarium.  The nomination packet should include a letter of nomination, curriculum vitae, and two letters of support.  Please be sure to address each item in the suggested nomination criteria.

Charles River Outstanding Clinical Veterinarian Award

This award, sponsored by Charles River Laboratories, is intended for those individuals who are employed to practice the art of clinical veterinary medicine as it applies to laboratory animal medicine or science.  The award excludes senior management staff and directors of animal facilities who carry strong administrative responsibilities.  The nominee must currently be practicing clinical laboratory animal medicine and/or surgery for at least 75% of his/her professional time, and who has sustained superior clinical performance, or who achieved recognition for a single contribution.  Recognition may be in the workplace or for exemplary service to the Branch.  All nominees must be members of TBAALAS.  Individuals may only be nominated by the veterinarian=s facility director, or in the case of Branch service, a member of the TBAALAS Board of Directors.  Letters of support may be from the facility of employment or other animal facilities.  A letter from the senior veterinarian or facility director acknowledging the nomination must be received for eligibility.  Each nominee must be a graduate of an AVMA recognized school of veterinary medicine, must have been out of school for at least one year and must have been employed as a clinician at his/her institution for a minimum of one year.  Please be sure to address each item in the suggested nomination criteria.

The Helen Jordan Vendor’s Award

This award is presented each year to one of our Allied Trades friends for their support and involvement in the Texas Branch of AALAS.  The Awards Committee is responsible for judging and selection of the Helen Jordan Vendor’s Award sponsored by Dr. Charles A. Montgomery, Jr..  The name and the nomination packet of the recipient are forwarded to a representative selected by Dr. Montgomery for presentation of a plaque each year at the TBAALAS annual meeting. To qualify, a candidate must be a TBAALAS commercial member for the past 5 years and be nominated by a TBAALAS member.  This award recognizes individuals who have through their support advanced the TBAALAS goals and purposes of continuing education, training and knowledge exchange.  An individual may achieve this award only once.

TBAALAS Award Nomination Packet Format- All nomination packets must contain the following three parts.  First, a completed nomination form.  This form can be found in select TBAALAS newsletters or by contacting the awards chairperson.  Second, the nomination document, which addresses how the nominee fits the criteria listed for each award.  This document must not exceed three pages, doubled spaced.  Third, additional letters of endorsement, limited to 2 pages each.  For the Helen Jordan Vendor’s Award, letters of endorsement should address how this individual’s efforts has significantly contributed to the goals of TBAALAS in continuing education, training and knowledge exchange by demonstrating personal outstanding service to the branch.  Letters should identify volunteer efforts outside those identified within the capacity of a vendor. The level of financial support should not to be deciding criteria.
