Job Summary:

Provides for the husbandry and technical services of laboratory animals in a humane, safe and sanitary manner using appropriate equipment and established procedures for a high containment animal facility including Bio Safety Level 3 or 4.

Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

  • Provides daily husbandry care including feeding and sanitation for multiple small and large species.
  • Performs technical services such as tissue sampling, blood draws, anesthesia, and injections.
  • Knowledge of current surgical techniques, instruments and their functions may be helpful.
  • Performs functions of research projects utilizing bio-hazardous substances. 
  • Assists in compilation of statistical data and engages in long-range planning.
  • Maintains knowledge of current surgical techniques, instruments and their functions.
  • Maintains knowledge of biohazard operations.
  • Determines appropriate animal housing systems according to specific regulations and criteria.
  • Assists principal investigator and/or veterinarian in preparation of a technical/surgical procedure, and may assist in procedure if required.
  • May conduct research techniques as required by investigator.
  • Provides general technical assistance to senior animal care staff and research staff.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for department.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Education / Experience:

Associate’s degree or equivalent and two years related experience. AALAS certified at the LAT level. Preferred experience of two or more years in a Bio Safety Laboratory 3 (BSL 3).

Equipment: 

Support equipment used in a laboratory animal science multi-species facility and is familiar with aseptic surgical techniques. Standard office equipment.

Working Environment:

High containment animal facility environment. Must not be allergic to animal dander, or have immunodeficiency diseases. Pregnancy may become a personnel safety factor in some laboratory animal science duties. Potential exposure to radiation and biohazards. Requires completion of appropriate vaccinations.
