Position Description
Laboratory Manager (1606)
SUMMARY
Function: To provide coordination, communication and leadership of all activities of the pathology laboratory.
Scope: Responsible for management of day-to-day operations of the pathology laboratory to include directing and reviewing quality of clinical laboratory work performed, supervising and evaluating personnel, quality control, safety, purchasing, training of new employees and students, preparation of reports, and provision of administrative support to experimental pathology.
DUTIES
Essential:
• Effectively utilizes all personnel assigned to the laboratory by verbally assigning schedules and preparing typed assignments using computer keyboard and software programs; approving leave requests with hand written approval and signature; performing evaluations by verbally speaking to personnel in an effective manner with a clear voice and by preparing typed evaluation using computer keyboard and software; visually reviewing weekly time sheets; compiling activity reports using calculator, computer keyboard and software.
• Manages workload of laboratory by verbally communicating in person or on telephone with faculty and supervisors in other departmental sections and with outside investigators.
• Directs and evaluates development of laboratory procedures by visually reading the procedures, by observing and/or manually performing the procedures requiring visualization and manual manipulation of specimens and laboratory equipment.
• Proposes the purchase of permanent equipment and supply items for contract by reading equipment and supply descriptions, by talking clearly on telephone or in person to sales representatives, and by performing cost analyses using computer keyboard and software.
• Reviews monthly reports, billing, and statistical data; prepares annual reports and participates in grant and contract renewals by visually reviewing data, by verbally presenting information in a clean voice, and by preparing reports using computer keyboard and software.
• Performs clinical procedures requiring manual manipulation of specimens, using laboratory analyzers, centrifuges, mechanical pipettes, glass slides, microscopes, biosafety cabinets, incubators, refrigerators, and freezers.
• Directs laboratory personnel in laboratory safety and compliance with departmental and regulatory guidelines by visually inspecting laboratory, by reading regulations, and by presenting protocols to laboratory personnel with oral presentations and typed documents using computer keyboard and software.
• Interviews and participates in hiring new personnel by speaking in a clear, concise voice, and by visually reading and reviewing applications. Conducts walking tours of the laboratory with laboratory applicants.
• Attends and participates in departmental planning meetings, presenting information verbally in a clear voice, and preparing typed reports using computer keyboard and software.
• Attends and participates in continuing education seminars; listening to materials presented, visually reviewing materials, and communicating verbally with investigators and educators.
• Participates in GLP protocols:
• Completes in-house GLP training program.
• Performs Clinical Pathology procedures following GLP and laboratory SOP guidelines.
• Develops laboratory SOPs that comply with the department's GLP guidelines.
• Reviews SOPs according to the department of GLP guidelines.
• Monitors quality control and ensures compliance with established regulations.
• Manages staffing and scheduling of GLP protocols for Clinical Pathology Laboratory.
• Ensures laboratory compliance with MDACC and FDA regulations.
Marginal Functions:
1. Moves laboratory equipment and supplies by bending, lifting, and carrying materials.
2. Transports laboratory specimens in a motor vehicle by driving to other sections.
• Attends meetings and seminars in Houston and other cities by driving motor vehicle.
• Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION
Received: Direct supervision from Section Chief . General supervision from Clinical Veterinary Pathologist.
Given: General supervision of all classified personnel assigned to the section.
EDUCATION
Required: Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or related Allied Health field.
Preferred: Master's degree in Health Care Management or related field.
EXPERIENCE
Required: Seven years experience in an allied health care or basic science field, including two years in a supervisory capacity.
CERTIFICATION
Required: One or more of the following required:
- Certified Medical Technologist (MT) by American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP)
- Certified Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by National Certifying Agency (NCA)
- Certified Cytogenetics Technologist (CT) by National Certifying Agency (NCA)
- HLA Certified Histocompatability Technologist (CHT) by American Society for Histocompatability and Immunogenetics (ASH).
WORK CONDITIONS:
Laboratory environment; must tolerate the sight of body fluids/tissues as well as unpleasant odors of various specimens and chemicals.
