
Dr. Charles 'Chuck' Raflo died March 1, 2010 after a lengthy illness. He had recently retired from Baylor College of Medicine where he was Associate Director and Attending Veterinarian in the Center for Comparative Medicine.
Chuck was born on June 14, 1942 and grew up in Ohio. He attended The Ohio State University where he received his Bachelor's of Science in Agriculture/Animal Science. He received a Master's of Science in Laboratory Animal Medicine and his DVM from The Ohio State University.
Dr. Raflo entered military service as a veterinarian in 1967 where he served in various positions of increasing responsibility at numerous Army, Navy, and Department of Defense facilities in the United States, Korea, and Germany. He rose from the rank of Captain to Colonel in the United States Army Veterinary Corps. During his military career, he received several Meritorious Service awards. He retired from military service in 1991 and then served as Director of Animal Care Operations at the University of Houston. Following that, he joined Baylor College of Medicine in September, 2004 where he served as Associate Director of the Center for Comparative Medicine until his retirement in February, 2010.
During his career, he held academic appointments at the University of California, San Diego, Essex Community College, and the University of Houston. In addition to his work in the military and academia, he served as a veterinary consultant with various organizations including the University of California at San Diego, the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, The Catholic University of America, Atlantic Resources Corporation, Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, and Ophidia Products.
He was Diplomate, American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) and served this organization in several capacities, including editor of the newsletter and the policies and procedures manual and chair of a Director search committee in 1995. He served on the Board of Directors from 1996 - 1999 and served as Secretary/Treasurer of ACLAM from 1999 until his death. Other society memberships included the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners, Texas Branch of AALAS, Alpha Psi Veterinary Fraternity, and Phi Zeta Honorary Veterinary Fraternity.
Chuck will be remembered for his infectious laugh, sense of humor, and his love of travel. He is survived by his wife Rikki, a son David, a daughter Kelly Daseide and her husband Cliff and their two children Sam and Rebecca, and his brother Norman Raflo, DVM. He will be greatly missed.
Military burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, April 21, 2010.
